Suffering from burnout? Time management problems? Fill your tank!!

I don’t think I have any vices as you’d describe vices to be.  I don’t smoke or drink alcohol, my diet is quite good, and I have a daily exercise routine.  However, if I do have a vice, it’s this: I have this tendency to over commit.  Well, I dunno if it’s my fault, but, man, I just realize I truly have a lot on my plate.

And so this blog entry is for those of us who juggle through so many responsibilities and wear too many hats to the point that we fry ourselves.  How do we avoid burnout?  What time management skills can we use so that we can still excel even if the demands on our time are so high?

Maybe you can relate to one of my favorite speakers and authors, Dr. Wayne Cordeiro, author of the bestseller Leading on Empty: Refilling Your Tank and Renewing Your Passion.  He suffered from incredible burnout.  It was so bad that he was warned that if he doesn’t change his Mach 4 schedule, he’d never be productive again.  See his video here, an excerpt from his excellent Dead Leader Running talk:



Yeah, I can relate.  A co-worker and close friend calls me “the juggler” because of all the hats that I have to wear, from senior teacher, to husband, to parent, to active church member, to blogger.  Mach 4 schedule?  Yep. 

If you can relate as well, then I suggest you take a hard look at the tips Dr. Cordeiro presents in Leading On Empty.  The book is gold..  It would give you tips on how to bring joy back in your work, improve time management, and avoid burnout.

  2. I feel this. I should change everything in me.. from schedule down to attitude.. ahh that's pretty bad of me. I should manage to change some of it especially the negative ones.. :(( Thanks for sharing this CArlo. 🙂

  3. Great post. I suffered from burnout just last year, at age 23. My first job was a very busy one, and I was given a lot of responsibilities very early on. Excited and wanting to prove a lot, I was pulling 7-day work weeks! My boss and another senior guy forced me on a plane to Davao and asked me to take a 4-day relaxation and spiritual reflection camp. It did me A LOT OF GOOD. Now I know better and don't push myself to death (almost literally) working.

  4. same here! In my case to prevent burnout i make it a point that a have a daily break or a thing Icould do to break the monotony of work

  5. I suffer from burnout from time to time. I have a full time job (40 hours a week), a part time job (30 hours a week), and most importantly I'm a 24/7 Mommy and wife. I'll definitely check this book out. Seems I really need it now. 🙂

  7. time management is really the key for me to avoid burnout which, i have to be honest, i do get to experience from time to time. the bad thing is, my blogs suffer because of it

  8. Time is always difficult to manage and somehow it moves opposite of how we desire. Too fast when we're on a rush and too slow when we're bored. Time management needs prioritizing on which is the better task and committing to them first.

  9. Most of the time people who works hard and takes on lots of responsibilities get burned-out. Time management is really essential, also one need to re-think and re-focus. Prioritize only things that you can afford to do thus to avoid other people's expectations as well not to be met.

  10. Burnout, guess the term for me is roasted! LOL But I can relate to this burnout stuff a lot. And I will definitely have to alter my scheds next year.

I have been very this year that I almost experienced that.. whenever kase I feel like I have too much on my plate, I take a rest and figure things out.. for a mom like me with 4 kids, burned out is the least on my priority. I really have to handle myself well for the kids 🙂 and most of the times it's my blog that suffers! hahaha

  15. Burned out… I experienced this during my corporate days. I used to take home some unfinished works and my husband didn't like the idea and that's one thing we argued about. I was truly dedicated to my job and it's only now that I realized, I should have not overused my resources.

  16. We could all use a little de-cluttering in our lives. We should try to learn to say "no" to certain responsibilities, if they will only add up to our stress.

  17. The message is also true for the pastors and priests I know. They got tired of serving people. They tried to give it all that nothing was left on them.

    As a professional speaker, I came to a point when I thought I was making myself suffer unnecessarily. I meet people everyday that I did not have time to rest and reflect on my experiences.
